COP 3 - Research 3
Ratatouille
Ratatouille is a film staring a rat that wants to be a chef. My argument here Is that we can relate to him regardless of appearance. Most of my research pushes the importance of appearance and how we can relate to that, but Ratatouille is an example in which appearance is in-important, we can relate to him regardless of his appearance.
UP
Up has a begin sequence that is jam packed with emotion. This case study provides an example of sympathy and empathy. Carl ages and changes in the intro, which gives a verity of ages someone to empathise or sympathise with him. He goes through lots of experiences some that a few may empathise with, but some will sympathise with.

This website talks about why it is people relate to fictional characters. It talks about fictional characters and how they are portrayed and how we see them. It talks about a writers opinion on characters and how they are written.
COP 3 - Research 2
Racism in animation.
Disney is well known for its animated features. But looking back into its history there are times when its choice of character designs where shocking.
Disney's fantasia had a whole character that had to be removed from a scene, the video below has a side by side comparison of the original animation and the released animation. The original had a smaller centaur that was meant to represent a slave to the other centaurs, for obvious reasons she was removed.
Disney's first animated feature to have an African American person in the starting role was released in 2009. Disney's first animated feature was released in 1937. It took 72 years for Disney to create a character of African American person in the staring role.
It is not only racism that is a part of animation, people with disability's and the LGBTQ community have been poorly represented. I researched into The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Mulan.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame focuses on Quasimodo a man suffering from an disability that affects his appearance, the film follows him and how he is eventually excepted by his community. This is one of the only Disney's films that have a person with a disability, even so his ending isn't as happy as one might think, Esmerelda (his love interest) chooses another man, who is handsome and athletic looking, which does not really provide the best message.
Mulan's story follows Mulan's transition into a man, to defend her country and save her farther. Mulan's story is the closest thing to an LGBTQ character being represented in a Disney feature, as she does transition in to a man, even so she does return to her femininity as the film comes to a close.

Visual storytelling: the art and technique
A series of book I used to research into my essay, although they provided a lot of additional research the essay its self did not include any of that additional information.
Body image: understanding body dissatisfaction in men, women and children, I found inciteful as it gave a deeper understanding into how we perceive ourselves as people. They essay began by focusing on how appearance was important in character design, therefore learning about how we see ourselves and perceive appearance was very insightful.
The designed self: Psychoanalysis and contemporary identities. A book about keeping up with newer generations. Essentially learning about keeping present with urban and popular culture. The book discuss what younger generations do, and how they behave in comparison to past generations, expressing how drug culture and alcohol have and are affecting behaviour.
Make toons that sell without selling out, a book about cartoon creating in general, but had a small chapter on character design which I found very helpful. It stated simply what a good character design needed, and what it meant to create a character design.

COP 3 - Practical 5
Finished Character Pages.
Here are each of the finished character pages, I have given each facial expression and written their synopsis.
I also created a little scene showing how Rosie would work with in the family dynamic, as she would be in the home she could be accessible from every part of the home.
COP 3 - Practical 4
The characters personalities and new roles.
Jane is busy woman working full time as a historian with a specialism of important women in history. She also contributes to her neighbourhood running a local recycling society that promotes helping the plant. On weekends she loves nothing more than spending time with her kids. She is a focused, smart, caring woman with a big heart.
George is a stay at home dad that works as a freelance electrician. He’s busy with the children making sure that everyone is happy. He takes any job that comes his way as he loves what he does. His biggest hobby is cooking and loves coming up with new meals for the family to try. George is a strong minded, protective person who cares deeply about his family.
Elroy is an adventures little boy that finds everything exciting. He is an incredibly smart child achieving above his peers. He loves playing with his toys his favourite being is Bionic Bella doll. He’s always off on some adventure with the family pet Astro. He is a sneaky little boy, who sees the world in a magical way. He's a bright, happy little boy.
Judy is an average teenage girl she’s class president and takes dance classes after school. Judy loves to dance and wants to become a famous dancer when she grows up. She can be moody at times but as a rule Judy is a pleasant teen who keeps herself to herself only having a few close friends. She is a busy person, focusing on her future career.

Creating the whole family.

when creating these three versions of the family there was a lot to consider, how would the children fit in with the aesthetic of the other family members. I also had to consider their appearances. Each had to consider the personalities id given to the members of the family. Judy being a dancer I aimed to give a dancers figure, and appearance when considering her style.
Out of all the designs the first set of family members our my favourites as they have a simple yet affective design, and have an appealing look to a young person as they have simple shapes and colours, meaning they have an aesthetic that a lot of cartoons now have.

Creating George.
As I have already designed the Janes and received feedback I began creating George.

I took a selection of different Janes and then designed a group of Georges to match.
The bottom too where an experiment to see how they would look if they where catered to children. The higher row of George and Janes where catered to an older audience, the top right being for a much more adult audience (18+) the middle being a lot more sketchy could be a family show, and finally the left being more for a young adult audience ranging from 14-16+.

Ratatouille - Remy is a non human character but one we still relate to.
Carl for up - People of any age can relate and empathise with him
TMNT - Every version of the turtles has a different design and a different way for people to relate and empathise with them.
Continuing with the practical -
The sixties was a freighting time - civil rights movements - generation gaps, nucellar war. Lots of riots. Generally a time of a lot of fighting, a lot of war. But the fashion was very bright and colourful.
Just come out of a time where things were expected of each of us, but the sixties was an era of change.
Here was my first finished version of Jane, she was based of one of the original concept designs.
I then continued to do a series of different Janes so that I had could post it online and receive feedback for which people most prefer. My personal favourites are the bottom right, the bottom middle and the upper middle.Friday, November 16, 2018

LAUAN601 - Progress 2.
This week I began the essay its self, starting a draft of chapter 1 and 2. I found that making a plan for how I will set out my essay to be the most helpful way for me to sort my self out.
How are we going to structure chapter 2?
Begin by opening out the chapter
First topic. - The importance of Relatability in character design.
